Adam 亚当 古老、陈旧、原始的象征。
据《圣经·旧约·创世纪》(Bible, Old Testament, Genesis)第2章记载,上帝在创造了万事万物之后,在第六天创造了人,以替他管理世上的一切。上帝根据自己的模样,“用地上的尘土造人,将生气吹在他的鼻孔里,他就成了有灵的活人。”(And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.)这就是亚当——世界第一人、人类的始祖。自亚当之后,人类才开始在大地上繁衍生息,一代又一代,一年又一年,如今人类的文明已经辉煌到了21世纪,对如今的人们来说,亚当——我们的老祖宗已经是很古老很原始很陈旧的记忆了,所以,在英语里,“亚当”(Adam)成了“古老、陈旧、原始的象征”。如;
That joke you told me is as old as Adam, but I still think it’s very funny.
(你给我讲的那个笑话已经老掉牙了,不过我还是觉得挺有趣。)
I would not marry her though she were endowed with all that Adam had left him before he transgressed.
(即使亚当把他没有犯罪以前的全部家产传给我,我也不愿意要她做妻子。)
